Two full weeks has passed since my internship with Kooshi started, although technically I’m working for 3 Little Pigs, a web development company contracted by the former company. Enjoyable is probably a slight understatement to describe my experience there so far, and to be honest there isn’t anything to complain about, except maybe the weather or humidity if I walked to town from work.

The company size is relatively small and the working environment there is pretty flexible, such as reporting to work at a fixed time, so I’m able to come and leave work late occassionally. The people there are nice and friendly, and the workload I’m tasked with is really manageable. Moreover, I’m provided with my own desktop, and not to mention a 21.5″ monitor, so really there are no complaints from me there.

Moving on to the actual work I’m given, I must say that there is no shortage of challenges here as well. I’ve been given quite a variety of assignments to accomplish thus far, ranging from menial and relatively trivial content-updating to more unbounded tasks like redesigning a site from scratch. I guess I really enjoy building websites, and the variance in my workload has definitely kept boredom from creeping into my work life.

I’ve always felt an internship has to involve some aspect of learning, and in my current position there are quite a few opportunities for me to pick up relevant skills in the field of web design and development. I’ve forced myself to use Dreamweaver at work, and although it’s taken a bit of time to get used to, it’s certainly a useful IDE to know.

I will also have to learn osCommerce soon, so that I’ll be able to make changes to the Kooshi site when necessary. I’m not that excited about this, having avoided it once, but I guess the inevitably will push me to at least confront this framework.

There are still plenty more opportunities that I foresee ahead, such as learning video-editing and even possibly Flash. Also, there’s still at least another month and a half to go for this internship, and I’m already quite sure that it’ll be a fruitful one.
