These past seven days have been terribly busy for me, mainly because I’m in the middle of an eight-day employment term with Singapore Pools. I was rather lucky to secure two jobs within a span of two days, the first an internship with Avant Global, and the second this current temporary job as a surveyor. I’ve worked part-time under Singapore Pools twice before, once in a similar role and prior to that as a promoter for PoolzConnect, their account betting service.

This job isn’t as taxing as it may sound because I’m stationed at a fixed outlet, and fortunately the Siglap branch that I’m assigned to is comfortably air-conditioned. In fact, the design of this particular outlet is a new concept which Singapore Pools is trying to implement, and it is not only more aesthetically-pleasing but also projects a classy image. My working environment isn’t bad at all, and neither are the hours long, so perhaps it’s just the mind-numbing boringness of the job that tires me out.

This is my third spell with Singapore Pools, and the official title of my position is ‘Customer Service Ambassador’. It sounds a lot nicer than what I actually do, which primarily is a simple survey of the customers’ betting habits, as well as teaching them any game that they are unfamiliar with. The latter requirement of my job has made me feel slightly irresponsible at times, as casual betting in my opinion can easily turn into an obsession.

The nature of my role also grants a certain amount of interaction with the betting population, of which the elderly make up a significant portion. In my conversations with them I’ve often noticed the glaring difference in perspectives, likely brought about by the generation gap. Also, despite their attempts to appear the wiser or more experienced, the irony is that they probably spent the last decade or more giving money to Singapore Pools and being victims of their own gambling addictions.

Tomorrow is my last day of this job, and the following day begins my much-anticipated internship. Working this past week has made me feel a tad more useful, albeit more weary, and time has passed a lot quicker too. It’s a welcomed break from programming, although I would like to get back on track as soon as possible. Burning weekends at a mere $7 per hour definitely isn’t the right long-term undertaking for me.
