I’ve been spending the greater part of the past three weeks building a site as part of my internship under Avant Global. The internship is over, but I’ve been commissioned to carry on developing it until it’s ready for launch. That time is soon, I hope, as school is set on the runway about to take off like a Concorde and I really don’t want to be left on the tarmac.
I won’t really say much about the site now, as there’s still a few minor details to touch up, but I’d just like to take the time here to rant about a certain browser that’s causing me and I believe thousands of other web developers substantial stress and pain. Internet Explorer, 6 in particular, has been hard to tweak for, and I made the mistake of not developing with it as the base browser. I already spent much effort amending stylesheet codes to fix the site for IE7, and now IE6 seems to be the boss at the end of a very long and tiring level. One that’s nearly impossible to win.
School has just started, as I mentioned, and I’m already feeling the pressure of the coming semester. Checking IVLE has returned as a habit and I sometimes worry about missing out on information that’s been posted there, especially since I’ve been really busy working these past few days. I got the modules that I wanted, which is a relief, but another bout of stress comes in the form of tutorial balloting. This seems even more crucial as I’ll be grouped with my classmates for projects, so hopefully I’ll be able to get into the same tutorial classes as my friends.
Another disheartening thing is that the non-examinable modules seem the hardest to score. The module this semester is NM2208 Principles of Visual Communication, which on the surface seems to be a fun module involving a series of individual design projects. Under that though, one’s ability to consistently design and deliver at a high level will definitely be questioned. A blog, portfolio as well as a final project is expected for this module, and on top of that assignments amounting to half the grade.
I better get that blog up and running soon, not to mention getting started on my portfolio too. There’s still a bunch of surveys and revision to do for other modules as well, and it won’t be long before tutorial sessions begin. School’s about to take off and I better get myself comfortably seated for the long journey ahead.
Update: I’ve set up the blog for NM2208 here, and decided to go with the same theme as this one. I don’t really fancy going through another hundred or so Wordpress themes picking out another one that I really like, so that’s why.
Further Update: I’ve changed the WordPress theme for Expression to a much simpler one which utilises jQuery’s Coda slider.
