I’ve been really busy these last two weeks to say the least, but just thought I’d post something here since it’s the weekend anyway. I don’t have really much to write about, though, so I’ll just let you in on the happenings of this past fortnight.
The first week was more or less spent on the final preparations of two mid-term tests, namely CS1102 Data Structures and Algorithms and CS2100 Computer Organisation. These were fortunately scheduled on different days near the end of the week, so there was sufficient time for last-minute revision as well. I was also lucky to have only two mid-term tests out of my five modules, so it can be said that my week was more comfortable than most other students.
My first paper, CS1102 Data Structures and Algorithms, was on Thursday evening, and it was pretty tough. I wasn’t really sure about the format of the paper prior to the test, and the heavily-weight open-ended questions were not as straightforward or clear as I had hoped. The results aren’t out yet, so I can only wait with nervous apprehension to see how well I fared.
The second paper was considerably a breeze and a lot easier than I had expected. Granted, there were a few trick questions but for an open-book test the rest of the paper was rather straightforward. I did make a careless mistake, however, and am left to rue the lost marks there. I’m satisfied with the marks I got nonetheless, although the test only contributes to 15% of the final grade.
Last week was also a busy week, but while it should have been in an academic sense, I was actually heavily involved in designing a website for my brothers and their friend. It’s currently still under development, so I won’t share it here, but I’m quite excited about the project and its direction. It’s always fun to be part of something that harnesses the Web and technology to provide a useful service, and I’m glad that I was able to contribute to it.
I’m using quite a fair bit of jQuery in the design, and I’m really impressed at how easy and powerful it is to enhance the usability of a website through simple animations and interactions. I used to search for scripts and plugins in the past, but for the simple effects used in the site, I decided to write them myself. They’re not perfect but they’ve definitely gotten me keen in learning jQuery in the coming weeks, or probably during the holidays.
Update: I did well for both my mid-terms, and without trying to sound arrogant, I’m really pleased with myself. Hopefully I’ll be able to score well in both these modules, especially since they are the ones that have been taking up a bulk of my time this semester.
