I’ve been meaning to write this post for over a week, but despite the end of my internship, I’ve still been terribly busy with other commitments of late. I honestly never thought I’d say this about this past summer, but the last two months or so seemed to have gone by much quicker than I would have had imagined.

My internship with 3 Little Pigs and Kooshi is over, and through this internship I’ve been able to gain much exposure to various web development practices. I managed to spend some time taking a look at osCommerce and Joomla, both of which I’m still terribly uninterested in learning, whether by some form of prejudice or just sheer laziness. I’ve spent enough time using Dreamweaver at work to be sufficiently familiar with the basics of the IDE, and it seems when handling certain assignments I’m more used to using it then Notepad++.

A part of my internship involved trivial, repetitive labour, which is understandable for any work at intern level, not to mention that web development isn’t all fun and roses. There were definitely tiring days, or afternoons which seemed to never pass quick enough, but thankfully those times are over. I guess such mundane periods are a necessity as ultimately work has to be done, although I doubt I’d miss them.

An interesting thing I got out of this internship was the chance to meet people in quite a range of creative fields. Not just the fellow fashion and graphic designing interns, but also the cast of the Kooshi photo shoot in July. It was truly an eye-opener for me, and I think it’s made the internship a lot more enjoyable and worthwhile. The take away I derived from all this only reinforced my recent opinion that one’s standard of academia isn’t everything, that in certain contexts it can even be meaningless if one has nothing else to show. Hopefully, I’ll have the courage to pursue my passion too, even in the next three years that I’m confined to the Multi-Purpose Sports Halls of NUS.

I recently attended the IDA ELITe briefing at Suntec, and I must say it’s a really attractive programme. Not only does it offer a relatively high reimbursement of certification courses and travelling allowances, but the best part is that it is completely bond-free. An internship requirement as well as an industry project will have to be fulfilled, but I believe these are the more useful aspects of the programme. I think there’s still an interview round I’ll have to get through though.

School’s starting next week, and I’m kind of dreading returning to the mundane routine of lectures and tutorials. It’s hard to believe I’m already a quarter through my four-year academic term in NUS, and I can only wonder whether this coming semester will be fun or dull, even though it’s definitely going to be tiring. I’m not doing any non-examinable modules this semester, so maybe I’ll be able to do a bit better this time round.
